The Fabulous Philippines

THE FABULOUS PHILIPPINES

I have spent the past couple weeks researching the Philippines and have learned a lot about it.  The Philippines is a country rich with culture, from interesting hand gestures, to awesome martial arts.  The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 islands and is located in Asia.  Filipinos are very hardworking and try their best to make you feel at home.  The government is similar to the U.S. because it is a Democratic Republic and the citizens vote for all the same government officials like the president, the vice president, senators, and representatives. One of the martial arts created in the Philippines, Arnis, doesn’t have a proper uniform or proper weapon that is used which is unique and makes it seem more casual than other martial arts. Not saying that trying to kill someone with a weapon is casual, but it seems less formal. The Tinikling is the national dance of the Philippines.  Dancers dance gracefully by hopping quickly between bamboo poles.  Hand and body gestures in the Philippines are much different than anywhere else in the world, such as a quick raise of the eyebrows can mean “hello” or “yes”. It's different than the U.S., so if you travel there, try to learn some of the gestures first, or you might not know what someone means. The Philippines seems like a great place to visit and I learned a lot of interesting things about it.

  1. I think you did learn a lot about the Philippines and I hope you are able to share the martial arts and dances with the class. Videos of these would really enhance the presentation, should you choose to present those aspects. I think the comparison to the US is important and I'm glad you did that as well!

  2. Turkey and the Philippines are extremely different. One similarity is that dance is a big part of their cultures. Except the dances are a lot different. Overall great job on your presentation I really enjoyed it.

  3. I didn't know martial arts was big in the Philippines! Israel doesn't normally practice martial arts or does dancing where you have to jump over poles! You did a great job, well done.

  4. Great job! The Philippines and Ireland are very different. Some of these differences include the food, the arts, and the history. In some ways, they are also similar. Both countries have democratic governments, and English also one of the main languages in Ireland. I enjoyed learning about the dance and martial arts in the Philippines. In the end, I learned a lot about the Philippines.

  6. Great job on your presentation. I learned a lot about the Philippines. The Philippines is a democratic republic and the UK is a constitutional monarchy. The Philippines economy is based off of outsourcing while the UK's economy is based off cars and petroleum. Overall, the Philippines seems like a very cool country and I hope that I can go there someday.
